I've been hanging around gybo a bit– probably the best website for mahsups/bootlegs around. I’ve tried my hand at a few, and if you want to download them – they’re here …

Dynamite Gurls

Caution - may cause diabetic reaction from the amount of ear candy and sweet sweet pop. May contain fragments of Taio Cruz, Katy Perry, Black Eyed Peas and other nutritionally unsound soundbites.

(Wish I was) Under Kylie

Kylie Minogue "On a Night Like This" vs The Church "Under the Milky Way"

Hope it makes a for a memorable night for someone. I have always loved "Milky Way" and hope the actual execution of mashing with Kylie is less offensive than the idea might seem at first.

Devil Went Down On Betty

Spiderbait's Black Betty - vs Charlie Daniels Band - Devil Went down to Georgia

This was done for the Bride of Monster Mash halloween album. There's some great tracks there - check - em out!

Oktoberfest - 99 Red Baloons

Jah - Das it Gut. Miene Oompah version of da gut song 99 Red Balloons. Did this for a corporate gig last year, and thought I'd bring it out for some Oktoberfest beer swilling joy this year. Ja, Das ist meiene vocals. I apologise to anyone that actually speaks German.

What I Want Is Some Lizard Cake

Flying Lizards Money vs Cake's Short Skirt Long Jacket

My first mash-up. Has had a bit of a resurgence recently, and made a few best of lists which is nice.

Bootiful Prudence

Beatles Dear Prudence vs Xtina's Beautiful

Very popular this one - I did about 30 gigs in two days when I first released it into the wild. Two great songs that really fit each other. Probably my favourite of my mashes - has a bit of heart hiding in there :-)

Betty Boy

John Denver's Thank God I'm a Country Boy vs Spiderbait's Black Betty

This was the original inspiration for Devil went down on Betty. Keys were about as far apart as you can go, so it turned into a sort of Cotton Eye Joe thing. Still, pumps along, and the violin solos are good.

Stepping Out

A Cover of Joe Jackson's Stepping Out

Seems to pop up all over the internet and on various poddcasts. Very chilled - sort of a night out with a restaurant and bottle of wine rather than a pumping dace club if you know what i mean.

Crash - Mashing New Years Eve

Or how I crash/mashed the Sydney New Years Eve celebrations...

So here's what happened...

I've been paying the bills by going back to my old job as a sound engineer at the Sydney Opera House and I ended up being rostered onto new years eve. Although you're working (without penalties I might add) on the biggest party night of the year, at least I was right in the middle of it.

My job was going to be operating the P.A. for the outside of the Opera House - and specifically to play the simulcast music for the 9pm and midnight fireworks shows.

Ching!!! (The sound of an idea)

Some of you might know there's a bit of a gybo meet-up coming up and I and the other gybo'ers going were roped into making a set. So I'd already given some thought to making a mashup set - but this was way too good an opportunity to let go. I had a lot of time at work, and started putting the mix together.

The Set!

My original plan was to create a killer hour long set of breathtakingly original and kickass mashups that would redefine the genre and silence the NAGAIUTB naysayers forever. In the end I made an OK 15 minutes and fleshed it out with all four tracks of my extensive back catalog and the whole thing ended up being 33.33.

I mentioned my plan, and played it to some other people at work. Some gave me that look and the "that's cool, but why would you spend time making it" comments. Philistines..

The main idea was to make a mix that I'd get away with playing out at about sunset, as perfection descended on Sydney Harbour. So it needed to include tracks most people would know, I wanted an Aussie skew, and I wanted to toy just a little bit with people's brains. I must admit I also picked easyish stuff so I could get it done quickly...

It's a long mix, but I also chopped it into morsels for y'all.

The Full NYE Mix!! (33.33)

So with the mix made, I headed up to my operating position and decided the best move would be to put on the usual stuff you'd hear, and then drop the mix at about 8pm. I was operating outside an Opera Gala event and waited till they went inside and then dropped the mix.

Well - I was paranoid about turning up too loud - but there were plenty of people having a boogie to it, and apart from one Indian man, no one asked me to turn it off.

Sitting there watching the sun set as my mix bounced across the harbour was an amazing feeling. I've had a difficult year in a lot of ways, and this just made me happy to do and get away with. The highlight for me was a boat with a huge Aboriginal flag, with everyone on board dancing and whistling along to my mix.

All in all by the time the fireworks fired at midnight, I was feeling amazing, particularly as Straight Lines played and fireworks danced across the city and harbour. Happy New Year !!
